THE ÍøºìºÚÁÏ (ÍøºìºÚÁÏ) is actively taking steps to help military veterans access higher education.

While a light has been shone recently on the difficulties veterans face accessing tertiary study, ÍøºìºÚÁÏ has been assessing the military ranking, training, experience and qualifications of Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel since 1995.

Now, in a move to formally acknowledge the skills, experience and academic potential of veterans, ÍøºìºÚÁÏ has modified its application process to include an additional question about veteran status.

The new question gives current and former ADF personnel and Reserves the opportunity to identify themselves as such when they apply, allowing universities to offer them special consideration and individual assistance.

Twenty-two of ÍøºìºÚÁÏ’s participating institutions currently accept military ranks for entry into bachelor degrees. In the last admissions period, 1,598 offers have been made to applicants with military qualifications.

ÍøºìºÚÁÏ is also working closely with the Australian Student Veterans Association (ASVA) to further facilitate entry into higher education for veterans. In October, ÍøºìºÚÁÏ representatives will be attending the Veteran Welfare Symposium to provide advice to veterans on entry and pathways into higher education.
